Collection/1800s

Two girls lean over a piano, one playing, the other turning the pages, in a warm room full of soft color. In 1892 the French state commissioned Renoir to paint it for the national museum of living artists.
It was the first of his paintings bought by the French state. Renoir was so anxious about the commission that he painted several versions of the scene before choosing this one.
