Woman in Blue Reading a Letter by Johannes Vermeer

A young woman in a blue jacket stands at a table and reads a letter, lips slightly parted. Behind her hangs a map of Holland. We never learn who wrote it or what it says.

The blue is ultramarine, made from ground lapis lazuli and then more expensive than gold. A restoration in 2011 removed yellowed varnish and brought the blues back. People still debate whether she is pregnant or simply wearing the fashion of the day.
