Collection/1600s

A frozen river in Holland, full of people skating, falling, playing a kind of golf on the ice, chatting and courting. Hendrick Avercamp painted it around 1608, during the coldest years of the Little Ice Age.
Avercamp was deaf and mute, and painted almost nothing but winter scenes. Look for the dead horse being eaten by crows, and the people relieving themselves under the bridge.
