Mary, the infant Jesus, the young John the Baptist and an angel meet in a rocky grotto. The angel points at John, and Jesus raises his hand in blessing. Leonardo painted this version in Milan in the 1480s.

There is a second version, painted later, in London. Look at the plants around the figures: botanists have identified real species, painted with the care of a scientist.
