Vertumnus by Giuseppe Arcimboldo

At first glance it’s a pile of fruit, vegetables and flowers. Look again and it’s a man: Emperor Rudolf II, dressed as Vertumnus, the Roman god of the seasons. A pear is his nose, cherries his lips, a gourd his chest.

Arcimboldo was court painter in Prague and made a whole series of these “composite heads”. Rudolf loved it. Painted in 1591, it was carried off to Sweden as war booty in 1648 and has been there ever since.
