The Sea of Ice by Caspar David Friedrich

Great slabs of Arctic ice pile up in a jagged pyramid under a pale sky. Only after a while do you notice the stern of a crushed ship on the right.

Friedrich painted it in 1823–24, possibly inspired by reports of polar expeditions. It found no buyer in his lifetime and was still in his studio when he died.
