Collection/1800s

Thomas Cole painted this view from Mount Holyoke in Massachusetts in 1836. A thunderstorm passes over wild forest on the left; on the right the Connecticut River curves around neat, sunny farmland.
It was meant as a picture of America at a turning point between wilderness and cultivation. Look closely at the bottom center: Cole painted himself, tiny, at his easel under an umbrella, looking up at us.
