The Love Letter by Johannes Vermeer

We look through a dark doorway into a bright room, where a maid has just handed a letter to her mistress, who holds a cittern. The two women exchange a knowing glance.

Vermeer painted it around 1669–70. In 1971 it was stolen from an exhibition in Brussels, cut from its frame and badly damaged before it was recovered.
