The Jewish Bride by Rembrandt

A man tenderly lays his hand on a woman’s chest; she touches his hand with her own. The title dates from the 19th century. The couple is probably the biblical Isaac and Rebecca, or a real Amsterdam couple dressed as them.

Look at his golden sleeve, built up with paint so thick Rembrandt may have used a palette knife. Van Gogh said he would give ten years of his life to sit in front of it for two weeks with only a crust of bread.
