The Gulf Stream by Winslow Homer

A man lies on the deck of a small dismasted boat in rough water, surrounded by sharks, as a waterspout approaches. Far off on the horizon there is a ship, which he may or may not have seen.

Winslow Homer painted it after trips to the Bahamas and Florida. When his dealer passed on questions about the man’s fate, Homer wrote back, a little exasperated, that he would be rescued and live happily ever after.
