The Fifer by Édouard Manet

A boy from the band of the Imperial Guard plays the fife against a plain gray background, with no floor or wall to place him. Manet painted it in 1866, after seeing Velázquez’s portraits in Madrid.

The Salon rejected it. Look at the flat black jacket and the red trousers with their black stripes, painted almost like a playing card.
