The Dog by Francisco Goya

A dog’s head peers over a dark slope into an enormous empty space. Nothing else. Goya painted it directly on a wall of his house outside Madrid, as one of his private “Black Paintings.”

Nobody knows whether the dog is sinking, hiding or watching. Its emptiness looks startlingly modern, and many 20th-century artists admired it.
