Collection/1800s

Venus stands on a scallop shell, wringing out her hair, surrounded by nymphs, tritons and cupids. Bouguereau painted it for the Salon of 1879.
He was the most successful academic painter of his day, famous for a smooth, flawless finish. The Impressionists despised him; collectors paid fortunes for his work.
