Collection/1800s

Van Gogh’s own bedroom in the Yellow House in Arles. He painted it with flat bright colors that he hoped would feel restful, like a Japanese print. He made three versions; this is the second, painted at the asylum in Saint-Rémy in 1889.
The room looks strangely skewed. Part of that was the actual room, whose back wall stood at an angle. Look at the pairs of things: two chairs, two pillows, two portraits on the wall. Many see in them his hope for company.
