The Ballet Class by Edgar Degas

A class at the old Paris Opera: the ballet master leans on his stick, one dancer performs, and the others wait, stretch, fix their hair and chat. Degas painted it in the mid-1870s.

He painted more than a thousand works of dancers, but rarely the performance itself. He preferred rehearsals, waiting and exhaustion behind the glamour.
