Collection/1500s

Venus sleeps naked on a white sheet in a quiet landscape, one arm behind her head. Giorgione painted her around 1510 and died of the plague that same year. His younger colleague Titian finished the landscape and sky.
It became the model for centuries of reclining nudes, starting with Titian’s own Venus of Urbino. A Cupid at her feet was later painted over.
