Saturn Devouring His Son by Francisco Goya

In Roman myth, the god Saturn ate his children for fear that one would overthrow him. Goya painted this nightmare straight onto the wall of his dining room, late in life, deaf and alone in a house outside Madrid.

It is one of the fourteen “Black Paintings”, which Goya never titled or showed anyone. They were taken off the walls and transferred to canvas decades after his death.
