Saint John the Baptist by Leonardo da Vinci

John the Baptist emerges from total darkness, smiling, one finger pointing up toward heaven. It is probably Leonardo’s last painting, from around 1513 to 1516.

The softness of the shading, his famous sfumato, is taken to the extreme here: there are almost no lines at all. The smile has been compared, endlessly, to the Mona Lisa’s.
