Self-Portrait (1669) by Rembrandt

Rembrandt painted himself in the year he died, 1669, at 63. He looks out with a calm, tired face, his cap and skin painted in thick, soft layers.

He had lost his wife, his money and, months before, his son Titus. There is no self-pity here: just a long look at himself.
