Collection/1500s

King Henry VIII of England, broad-shouldered and jeweled, stares straight out. Hans Holbein, his court painter, made it around 1537, at the height of Henry’s power.
It is small, about the size of a sheet of letter paper, and it is the only portrait of Henry fully by Holbein that survives. His famous life-size mural of the king was destroyed when Whitehall Palace burned down in 1698.
