Pierrot by Antoine Watteau

A clown in white satin from the Italian comedy stands stiffly facing us, arms hanging, while his fellow actors lounge behind him. One rides a donkey, whose head peeks up at the bottom.

Watteau painted it around 1718. Nobody knows why; it may have been a sign for a café run by an actor. The figure was long known as Gilles.
