Composition with Large Red Plane, Yellow, Black, Gray and Blue by Piet Mondrian

Black lines, a big red square, small fields of yellow, blue and gray. By 1921 Piet Mondrian had reduced painting to straight lines and primary colors, believing that pure balance could express a universal harmony.

Nothing is accidental: the lines have different thicknesses, and some stop before the edge. This is one of the first works in his mature style. The Kunstmuseum in The Hague holds the largest Mondrian collection in the world.
