Man with a Hoe by Jean-François Millet

A farm laborer leans on his hoe in a stony field, exhausted, staring at us. Jean-François Millet painted him in 1860–62.

In 1899 Edwin Markham’s poem “The Man with the Hoe,” inspired by the painting, became a sensation in America.
