Madame de Pompadour by François Boucher

Madame de Pompadour, the mistress and close adviser of King Louis XV, reclines in a blue silk gown covered with roses. Around her lie books, letters, a quill and sheet music.

François Boucher painted her in 1756. The props were a message: she wanted to be seen as a patron of the arts and letters, not just a favorite.
