Le Déjeuner sur l'herbe by Édouard Manet

Two clothed men picnic in a wood with a naked woman, while another woman bathes behind them. The 1863 Paris Salon rejected it, and it was shown instead at the “Salon des Refusés”, where crowds came to laugh at it.

Nudes were fine, as long as they were goddesses. What shocked people was that these were modern Parisians, and that the woman looks straight at the viewer, unembarrassed. The model was Victorine Meurent, herself a painter.
