George Washington (Lansdowne Portrait) by Gilbert Stuart

George Washington stands at full length in a black velvet suit, one arm outstretched, beside a table with a quill and documents. Gilbert Stuart painted it in 1796.

It was a gift to the British statesman Lord Lansdowne. In 2001 the National Portrait Gallery in Washington bought it with a $20 million gift.
