Collection/1600s

A woman bends over a letter at a table, while her maid stands at the window, waiting, arms crossed. On the floor lie a crumpled letter and a red seal.
Vermeer painted it around 1670. It was stolen twice from an Irish country house, in 1974 and 1986, and recovered both times before it went to the National Gallery of Ireland.
