Collection/1800s

Steam and smoke fill the glass-and-iron hall of a Paris train station, with a locomotive arriving through the haze. In 1877 Monet asked permission to paint inside the Gare Saint-Lazare.
According to a story told by Renoir, Monet dressed in his best clothes and persuaded the station master to hold the trains and stoke the engines so they would make more smoke. He painted the station a dozen times.
