Collection/1800s

The port of Le Havre at dawn: orange sun, gray-blue mist, a few dark boats. Monet painted it quickly in 1872 and showed it two years later at an independent exhibition in Paris.
A critic mocked the title and called the whole group of painters “Impressionists”. They adopted the insult as their name. Look at the sun: in black-and-white photos it almost disappears, because it is nearly the same brightness as the sky around it.
