The Gray Tree by Piet Mondrian

A tree drawn in gray and black lines against a gray sky: branches curve and split until they look almost like a net. Piet Mondrian painted it in 1911.

It is a step between his early landscapes and his later grids. Over a series of tree paintings, the branches became horizontal and vertical lines.
