Self-Portrait (1500) by Albrecht Dürer

Dürer was 28 when he painted himself facing straight out, long hair framing his face, his hand to his fur collar. In the year 1500, this pose was reserved for images of Christ.

It was a bold statement about the artist as a creator. The inscription on the right, in Latin, reads: “I, Albrecht Dürer of Nuremberg, painted myself with everlasting colors at the age of 28.”
