Portrait of Baldassare Castiglione by Raphael

Baldassare Castiglione wrote The Book of the Courtier, a best-selling guide to perfect manners. His friend Raphael painted him around 1515 in soft grays, black and white.

The portrait was admired for centuries. Rembrandt sketched it when it came up at auction in Amsterdam in 1639, and borrowed the pose for his own self-portraits.
