Collection/1800s

Two Tahitian women sit under a tree; behind them, others dance before a statue of a goddess. In the foreground stands a bright red dog. The Tahitian title means something like “joyfulness.”
Gauguin painted it in 1892 on his first stay in Tahiti. When he showed it in Paris, visitors laughed at the red dog.
