A Burial at Ornans by Gustave Courbet

A funeral in Courbet’s home village: a priest, gravediggers, mourners in black, a dog. More than forty people, all painted at life size on a canvas nearly seven meters wide.

That size was reserved for kings, saints and battles. Showing ordinary villagers this way caused an uproar at the Salon of 1850–51, and made Courbet the leader of Realism.
